Winchester Model 1400 Serial Numbers
First thing would be a basic identification of the rifle. Does his rifle have a 22, 24 or 26' octagon, half octagon or round barrel with a forestock end cap? If so this would be a true Model 94 or does it have the 20' round barrel with barrel bands? If so then he has a Model 94 Carbine which is the style we commonly see and call a Model 94. Big difference in value. The true Model 94's can be worth double or more over the carbine but like I said condition is everything.
A few weeks ago a 1908 Mod 94 carbine in 25-35 popped up for sale locally so I went to look at it and the poor guy selling it must have got some real bad information. He was asking $1200.00 for it but the reality was (and given it's condition) it was maybe a $200.00 wall hanger and then it needed work for just that. As to value, and with info provided, I can answer that question with absolute accuracy.A Winchester 94, made in 1897, handed down 4 generations to its present owner is absolutely priceless.Sale value (for insurance purposes, etc.) is more problematic: Condition is everything. Rifle or carbine? Round or octagon barrel? Sights? No one could put a price on it without actually seeing the gun first hand.Tell your ersatz brother to go hunting with it, think about his ancestors who did the same, and on a solitary hunt he will feel a presence that is palpable.Great Grandpa will whisper where that buck is waiting.
Hey guys, brand new to this forum. I have the opportunity to buy a Winchester 1400 for (what seems to me) a really low price. I've tried to do some research on this gun and found alot of information on the Model 1400, but the problem im facing is that it doesnt have the same specs and it doesnt look like the same gun. I went on google images and finally found a pic another 1400 that looked exactly like the gun im looking into buying. When i clicked on the image i found out that the 1400 also came in a 'Trap' and 'Skeet' model. Can anybody confirm this just by looking at pics?
I'd appreciate any information that you could help me with. Also, what do you think is a fair price for this? Its a mk1 1400 trap.the mk2 has a button to release the bolt.the mk 1 doesnt.unique feature on the mk1 1400 is the full pistol grip. It was designed after the pigeon grade stock.mk1's had nicer grade of figure in the wood. They also have the familiar M12 duck bill rib extention.
The gun is circa 65-68. Historically it was the first new shotgun made in the new mass production assembly plant in new haven to replace the hand made model 50 and 59. It was an attempt to bite into rem 1100 sales. It never succeeded. Makes a good loaner gun or 1st gun. Keep it clean.footnote.the new winchester new haven assy plant bldg was recently raized. Part of the grounds were made into a city art museum.
Big Mike, the model 1400 was first made in 1964. Roadkill 1.1 uv unwrap tool. They started at SN 100,000. Trap and skeet models were introduced in 1966. The 1400 was produced until 1968 and was renamed the 1400 MKII. That would put the one you are looking at in that 2 year span. My best 'guess' is, it is a model 1400 trap from the information you have provided.
A picture of the actual firearm would help. The carrier release on the bottom of the receiver in front of the carrier is the tell tale between the 1400 and the 1400 MKII.

Wouldn't want to use it as a full time heavy usage trap gun but as a fun gun or loaner for $200 you cant get hurt, IMHO.Vic.
